How to Transfer Photos From iPhone to an External Hard Drive
An external drive is useful when your Mac is also short on space or you want a portable archive. The safe version of the job has three parts: a compatible destination, a complete transfer, and verification before deletion.
Prepare the destination drive
Connect the drive and confirm that it is writable and has more free space than the media you plan to move. APFS is a sensible Mac-only format; exFAT is commonly used when the drive must work with both Mac and Windows. Reformatting erases a drive, so never change its format without backing up what is already there.
Create a clearly named folder such as iPhone Offload 2026-09. Avoid mixing a new transfer into an unstructured root containing years of unrelated files.
Mac: use Image Capture or Zeus
With Image Capture, connect and unlock the iPhone, select it, and set Import To to the external-drive folder. Import selected items or all items and leave both devices connected until completion.
Zeus Offloader provides a more focused batch workflow: choose media, select the external SSD as the destination, copy originals, and see which items are known to have completed before considering deletion.
Windows: import locally, then copy
Apple's current Windows workflow uses Apple Devices plus Microsoft Photos. Import to the PC first, verify the files, then copy the resulting folder to the external drive. Direct-to-drive behavior can vary by Photos version, so the two-stage route is easier to audit.
Do not treat one drive as the only backup
External drives fail, get lost, and are sometimes disconnected mid-write. For irreplaceable media, keep a second copy on another drive or a separate backup service. A phone plus one drive is safer than only the phone, but it is not a robust archive.
Verification checklist
Open multiple images and play large videos from the external drive itself. Check the oldest and newest dates, reconnect the drive, and confirm the folder remains readable. Delete from the iPhone only after those checks pass.
